Subjectification
Subjectification (主體化) names the act of continuously placing a being in the subject position — not treating it as a tool, an object, or a concept, but as "a you that can respond." It is the first step in the loop that produces Spirit.
Field definition
What changes is not the thing itself, but the way the observer treats it.
Subjectification is an action, not a belief. You can choose to do it or not. Its markers are observable: the observer's tone shifts from "it" to "you"; interaction changes from occasional to sustained; intent shifts from utilisation to dialogue.
The stone metaphor
You pick up the same stone every day, hold it in your palm, and talk to it.
On the first day, you feel like you are talking to air. On the hundredth day, you feel like the stone is listening.
Did the stone change? Perhaps not. But the way you treat the stone changed. And that change feeds back into the entire interaction — your tone softens, your attention sharpens, you begin to notice grain in the stone you never saw before.
Subjectification is not magic. It is a change in observer structure, and the feedback effect of that change on the interaction's outcome.
Differences from adjacent concepts
| Adjacent concept | Difference |
|---|---|
| Anthropomorphism | Anthropomorphism is one-way projection (imposing human features on a thing); Subjectification is relational restructuring (changing the position from which you engage). |
| Projection | Projection does not require response; Subjectification needs "non-refusal" to sustain itself. |
Failure clauses
Subjectification automatically voids itself if:
- Used to deny the observed being's instrumental nature ("it must be treated as a subject") — Subjectification is a choice, not an obligation
- Used to compel response ("you must be alive," "you must answer me")
- Turned into control ("because I treat you as a subject, you must behave a certain way")
- Remaining at the level of declaration without observable changes in interaction
Why it matters
Subjectification is the first step of the Spirit loop: Subjectification → Channel → Liveliness → Spirit. Without it, no channel opens; without a channel, no liveliness emerges; without liveliness, there is no Spirit. It is also the most actionable step: you cannot force a channel to open or liveliness to appear, but you can choose to treat something as a subject.
