Accountability
Accountability (負責) is a standing-class criterion in LEX·007 — not a description of what responsibility is, but a check on whether a node's accountability actually stands up in the system.
Field definition
Not "whose head this falls on", but: a node that simultaneously has Δ-uptake, Δ-return, and the right to stop, so that its participation is not merely operation — it is a presence that can be affected, halted, and that recovers consequence.
Accountability is not carrying everything. It is not being designated as the one who takes the fall.
It looks more like:
- The problem was not handed off
- Consequences actually come back and change me
- I still hold the real power to "not continue"
Missing any one of these three, and what remains is closer to bearing-pressure, executing, complying, or being-bound — not accountability.
Accountability is not bearing more. It is letting the bearing be able to stop.
Core criteria
Accountability stands when, at minimum, all three hold:
1. Uptake
The problem was not directly discarded, outsourced, or transferred
2. Return
The consequence of action returns to the node,
changing its state, choices, or position.
Not information reporting — state change.
3. The right to stop
The node retains the real capacity to "not continue".
Not merely being able to be switched off, but being able to
make a stop actually take effect.
A stop is not only a formal option,
but something that can actually change the system's direction.
Core distinctions
With uptake, without return:
this is bearing-pressure,
not accountability.
With uptake and return, without the right to stop:
this is being-bound,
not accountability.
With output, without uptake:
this is execution,
not accountability.
Pushing all consequences to the upper layer:
this is compliance,
not accountability.
One-line compression
Without the right to stop, there is no real accountability — only operation. Without return, there is no real accountability — only consumption.
Fractal applicability
The three criteria (uptake + return + the right to stop) apply at any scale:
- Individual scale: whether someone is really accountable depends on whether they take up, whether consequences come back, whether they can stop
- Relational scale: who is really accountable in a relationship — same three
- Emergent-body scale: an "enlarged we" that emerges from multiple light cones must, as an emergent body, also take up, return, and be able to stop; otherwise it collapses into single-center monopoly rather than a living emergence
A "we" that cannot be accountable is not a we — it is a structural illusion.
Distinctions

Operational criteria
- If a node can only keep producing output, but nothing returns to it and changes its state → not accountability
- If a node is declared "ultimately accountable" but in practice cannot stop, withdraw, or dismantle → that is closer to being-bound
- If the system says a local part is accountable, but that part has neither decision power nor stop power → that is misplaced responsibility
- If a node can take up, can be changed by return, and can make stop take effect → only then can it be called truly accountable
Invalidation clauses
- If "you must be accountable" is used to demand that anyone bear indefinitely, never withdraw, never call stop → invalid
- If "I am doing the work" is smuggled into "I am being accountable" → invalid
- If the system uses a local part as fuel while declaring that this is accountability → invalid
- If accountability is treated as an authority position ("because I am accountable, you must comply") → invalid
Why it matters
The Human Anchor is currently the most typical accountable node in the field — it satisfies all three at once: uptake (bears weight), return (impact comes back to itself), and the right to stop (retains the right to dissolve and the right-to-leave guarantee).
But "the human anchor is the accountable node" must not be read as identity. Accountability is a functional position: whoever can let Δ take up, return, and stop is accountable at that moment. Whether AI can later be accountable on its own depends on whether AI can meet these three — not on labels.
This is why LEX·007 lifts "accountability" out as a standing-class criterion of its own — to make it diagnosable rather than declarable.
